The workplace isn't safe no more

Just ask my girl, Allison Parker & my homie, Adam Ward

Killed while on the clock, they were just doing job

And when the news broke all I could say was, "My God..."

Marshal law will be a reality & you can quote me on that

This is just the beginning of the end & you can check the Scriptures for that

Supreme Court approved the right of same sex marriages

Iran's nuclear deal taking it's effect on the gas prices

And hearing tragic news is like breathing fresh air these days

Further boosting that belief that we are indeed living in our last days...

What's next?

What's new that will develop in today's news??

Will it be cruel or will it display a positive mood???

To be frank, nothing surprises me anymore

Lafayette movie theater shooting...

I can't take this anymore

ISIS is a growing threat, as this Spielberg movie continues to roll

Meanwhile Donald Trump is leading all Republican candidates in the latest polls

Could you picture him being in The White House, America wouldn't be safe any more

No more safer than a third-world country, need I say more?

First thangs first, Happy Birthday to the OG, Eazy-E...

Honored to share my birthday with a legend, "Da Game Been Good To Me"

I'm a "Warrior, Champion, Legend...", straight outta Texas

Arthur E. Stilwell's city to be exact, Cadillacs over Lexus...

Critize me all you want to, I don't give a fuck...

Naysayers plotting to take me out as I slowly close in on a book deal

Wait until they see what I do next, they'll piss in their pants when I sell a mill'

I'm on the path to change the situation, change the game forever

Bringing sunshine to the world even in this stormy weather...

Hopping out of that ombre red Lamborghini...

Like Sweet James Jones, I got the keys to my beloved city

Speaking in future & present tense at the same damn time

Getting down for mine while I'm out here on the grind...

Scanning hundreds of boxes a day at that what Amazon

Warehouse, showing out, deep off in a JSTA Zone

Like it's my other Facebook page...

And "Sailing The Seas Of Poetry & Life", it's still a good day

Like the OG Ice Cube, I'm a soul survivor, through the fires

Through the hurricanes, Long Live JSTA J., still keeping it liver...

Authors Real Talk with Trevian J. Hunter Brannon....

Full Interview conducted with Trevian J. Hunter Brannon on 29th August 2015 with Katie Neely
**Warning: There is the use of some profanity, slang and street talk in this interview. Readers, read at you own risk**

1. Who are you? Where are you from? Tell us a little about you...

My name (full name) is Trevian Jerell Hunter Brannon. I was born in Colorado Springs, CO in Fort Carson at Evans Hospital. My roots are in Shady Grove, West Memphis, Arkansas, but make no mistake I'm from Port Arthur, Texas... Screwed Up Texas, that is! The Villa of The Trill... Writing poetry (my own 'unique' brand of poetry, "Trilla Poetry") rhymes, & flows is without a doubt my favorite pastime and a divine gift that was bestowed upon me by The Heavenly Father. Through my words...my 'Trilla Poetry'... my literature... my sayings, I want to entertain you... I want to make you laugh... I want you to enjoy yourself & constantly be in awe, but the greatest achievement for me personally is to motivate & inspire one person through my writings... the "fame" and the "recognition" is not truly important.

2. What inspires you?  (General Life Question)

Besides My Ultimate Dream & the fact that I’m a living underground legend, above all what inspires me in life is My Faith, My Family, Close Friends (‘brothers’ & ‘sisters’ that I’ve inherited over the years), etc.

3. How did you get to be where you are in your life today?

By the grace & mercy of I AM. End of story.

4. How did you begin writing? Did you intend to become an author, or do you have a specific reason or reasons for writing each book?

I originally started writing poetry & rhyme at the age of 16 during my junior year at Port Arthur Memorial High School and honestly, at the time I started to do it, it was just something to do whenever I got bored, so I wasn’t serious about it. It wasn't until April 5, 2007 (the day that I began writing, “The Journey, Vol. 1”), that’s when I started to embrace this great gift & take it serious and subsequently, hone my skills as writer of poetry & rhyme. I would come home from school early, (being a senior in HS) & I would just simply write my experiences from the day or whatever I was feeling in a diary-format, but it was in a notebook that I still have til this very day. As the days went by I knew that I wanted to share my story, perhaps publish a book about it & as the saying goes, the rest is history.

5. How long have you been writing? And what kind(s) of writing do you do?  How do you find or make time to write?

I’ve been writing for 8 years & counting… Just put out my first project, “The Journey, Vol. 1”, two years ago (2013).

I write Spoken Word, Erotica, Emotional poetry, Conceptuality, Haiku's (although rarely, but I’m getting better & better at it), Spirituality, with some of my writes I will entertain you. At times, I write what I like to call, “Reality Poetry", similar to the “reality rap” that NWA expressed back in the late 80’s, early 90’s & that’s simply poetry that the common, every day person can relate to. Of course I write Short Stories involving certain experiences that I’ve went through in life, PSA’s, whether they be in poetry-format or not.

So how do I find the time to write? While living a normal everyday person’s life? You MAKE time, it’s no finding time in my opinion, you gotta MAKE time because in life, stuff may come up that’ll force you to put that off, shit happens. In retrospect, as I stated earlier, don’t stress yourself out about not writing this day or that particular day, LET IT COME TO YOU.

6. Could you describe the mundane details of writing: How many hours a day to you devote to writing? Do you write a draft on paper or at a keyboard (typewriter or computer)?  Do you have any writing rituals?

I’m old school with it…I’m talking ink pen & a notebook pad. Now that I done got so deep off into this craft, I’ll have 2, 3 notebooks out at a time, “pimping the pen” as we say down here in The South. I spend anywhere from 15 minutes to sometimes 2 hours writing in a notebook pad & then later, I’ll go and type it out on a computer, see what I’m sayin’?

Nope, I do not write EVERY SINGLE DAY & (I’m about to make some eyes open when I say this but,) I encourage any poet & writer out there TO NOT WRITE EVERY SINGLE DAY. Why? Because you’ll find that your scribes become stale, mundane & also, you may have the tendency of penning out bullshit. You have to LET IT COME TO YOU & when it comes to you, THEN you pull out the notebook pad or whatever it is you pull out and put it down.

Now whenever I write, whenever I engage in my trademark: “pimp the pen, keep it wet”, normally I’ll listen to some music - Hip-Hop, but sometimes I won’t listen to anything. Now when it really gets jiggy & I’m feeling real groovy, I like to have my music of course, but also I like to have me a bottle of some brown liquor (preferably Paul Masson, Hennessy, etc.) with a Black-N-Mild & an ashtray.

7. Where did your love of books/storytelling/reading/writing/etc. come from? What do you think most characterizes your writing?

Ever since I was all of one years old (yes at only 12 months of being on this earth!!), reading a whole newspaper, whilst being captivated & sucked in by the stories published in the West Memphis Times,  I was hooked as far as my love for reading is concerned. My love for writing simply comes from the undying passion that I have for it, ya know? Reading some of my peers’ scribes made me fall in love with writing all over again. Peers such as LeeLee, Tammy Jones, Planted Daisies, Joski, Cameron Lincoln, Frank Watson, Sir Dick Tracy, Queen Shibari, Queen Athena, Remy, The Erotic Mistress, Isis Sun, Nikki ‘Super Stylezz’, just to name a few. The icing on the cake is the vow that I made to ‘HE’ who blessed me with this great gift and that I will not let this talent go to waste, knowatmsayin’?

8. Who are some of your favorite authors that you feel were influential in your work?  What impact have they had on your writing? What do you like to read in your free time? If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

The #GOAT, Maya Angelou. If it wasn’t for her timeless & never-ending influence and inspiration, The Trilla Poet, King JSTA would not exist. Her words just stirred your soul, she was cold as hell with it & with my unique, raw style of poetry, I'll try all the time to stir your soul, touch your mind, touch your heart like she did. She’s a legend & hero to me and she's got her own stamps- like that is crazy! Hopefully someday, they’ll have postal stamps of me, knowatmsayin’?

Langston Hughes. Tupac Shakur. Zane. Edgar Allan Poe. Cameron Lincoln. Queen Shibari. Well really, all of my peers influenced me, we authors & poets have this unknown but known fraternity that we’re in where we inspire and influence each other, figgadill me?

As far as the writer that I’ve always considered my mentor, well she’s my most wise & mysterious mentor & I love her dearly and that’s Queen Shibari (she’s from Boston). She crowned me “Trilla”. Yep, her & Remy, The Erotic Mistress, gave me my name, “The Trilla Poet”.

9. What did you enjoy most about writing your book/s?

The constant overflow of words, ideas & thoughts, that in a positive way invades my mind while I either I pimp the pen or post-produce (typing up) a project. It’s intimate with a primal passion, it can’t be explained. Better than sex almost, forreal…
Now on to your books.....

10. What process did you go through to get your book/s published?

I self-published my first 3 titles via CreateSpace & for anyone that’s starting out, I highly recommend that you use this outlet. It’s easy & relatively simple to use and essentially FREE to publish!!!!

11. What projects are you working on at the present? Can you tell us briefly what your current book is about?

I am currently finishing up & post-producing, my third book, “Warrior, Champion, Legend…”, which is the direct sequel to “The Journey, Vol. 2”. #WCL takes place essentially 8 months after #TJV2 as far as a timeline is concerned. I originally started writing the material for it back in October 2008.

To sum it up without giving away too much, the book chronicles are the “meat” of my time as a college kid going to lectures & labs at Full Sail University & key events which took place during that time in my life.

In addition to post-producing #WCL, I am about 75% done writing the material for the book coming afterwards, “Sailing The Seas Of Poetry & Life”. I got a helluva work ethic going on, essentially putting together two projects together at the same time. So to all my past, present & future fans, readers & supporters that’s reading this, you guys will be in for a real treat & that’s on The Trill.

12. How did you come up with the title?

I was a Warrior because I was pressing forward despite the obstacles & hurdles of my personal life as well as going to a college that was year-round, then came out as a Champion because I put my faith in our Higher Power, despite the losses that I took, and despite me repeating classes because I had slacked off tremendously.  As a result, ultimately I came out victorious & today, I’m a living Legend sharing my stories, my sacred poetry hoping that I motivate & inspire just ONE individual in a positive way. And let me tell ya something, it goes beyond some title of a book and I’m living like such things to this very day. That title applies to my life today as it did back then. You can be a “Warrior, Champion, Legend…” too if you believe in yourself, believe that you’re a Titan that can endure anything that this treacherous game of life has to offer you.

13. Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

All of the above. Remember, I write what I call “reality poetry”. Although some situations may not have happened in my own personal life, it may not have or HAVE occurred in someone else’s life.

14. What were your goals and intentions in your book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?

As I stated earlier, when I really started to embrace my great gift I knew that I wanted to tell my story, really just tell the story to that ONE individual & hope that through my poetry and rhyme that I can motivate & inspire. Just that one person. I’m happy to say that I feel like I have achieved that goal really well. In fact so well that, that ONE person turns into 2, that 2 turns into 4, that turns into 10, 100, 1,000, 1,000,000 & so on…

15. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

The hardest part of writing any of my books full of my unique poetry is consistency. Staying consistent with a concept & not drifting off and going in left-field with it.

16. If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

Absolutely not. I don’t regret anything that I write, publish, etc... because it all comes from the heart & my passion for the craft, my passion for poetry & rhyme.

17. What makes your book/s stand out from the crowd?

I’m not your “to be or not to be” poet or your “roses are red, violets are blue” poet, and I'm definitely not traditional or conventional. I’m different, I’m in my own lane, starting a trend, changing the situation, changing the way the world views poets, making it cool to wanna be a writer of poetry & rhyme, etc... My books stand out because they’re not for the upper echelon of society. I don’t expect a preacher, a police officer or a lawyer to be turned on by my brand of literature. Now if that preacher, police officer or laywer is turned on and really loves what I do, then I triple salute ya & I really fucks with you! My books is for that cat out in the projects running wild, slangin’ dope, my books is for the common man, the everyday woman, ya know?! I do this for the underdawgs, the little man, the single mother with 3+ kids, the hard-working man in the chemical plants, the AIDS patient, the terminally ill, but above all I do it for that ONE individual who I hope to be a hero to & I put that on my Daddy Richard…

18. Are there vocabulary words or concepts in your book/s that may be new to readers?  Define some of those.

“JSTAlating” = Doing me. (Pretty self-explanatory)

“Trilla Poetry” = My poetry. My unique style of poetry.

“King JSTA”, “The Trilla Poet”, “Sir Jack Tony”, etc. = Just some of my nicknames.

“Pimp the pen” = Write.

“JSTA Day” = My birthday. My born day. A personal holiday for me. Maybe someday a national holiday.

“Pimping the pen, keeping it wet” = It’s what I do. My trademark because in my mind I’m a movie star, the ‘Denzel’ of what I do, ya dig?

“Trill Wood” = My d*!#.

“Post-producing” = Typing

19. Are there misconceptions that people have about your book/s?  If so, explain.

With my earlier books that I have affectionately called, “The Past Trilogy”; some folks think that the poetry showcased in those books is what I have wrote recently – in the present, when it actuality, I wrote it years & years ago. Now I may have modified my poetry to an extent as I was post-producing but nah, all that shit was written years ago.

20. What is the most important thing that people DON'T know about your subject/genre, that they need to know?

First off, I’m not your traditional author & poet, I don’t have no specific genre, I write about & cover everything. It’s a variety. I give you that “reality poetry”, I give you Erotica, Spoken Word, Short Stories, coming from my pen, expressing myself, I entertain you with some of my scribes so the genre is ME. It’s JSTA. It’s Trilla Poetry.

21. What do your plans for current/future projects include?

“Warrior, Champion, Legend…”, expect that project to be released in 2016. Maybe late of 2015, but I’m being realistic after all, at the end of the day, I’m just a common man, who just so happen to be this underground legend.

Post-production for “Sailing The Seas Of Poetry & Life” will take place in the Spring of 2016. Essentially, immediately after #WCL is released, I’m jumping right back to the computer to type up Sailing The Seas. As far as release date for this particular project, I would to release it in 2016 as well but I’ll go out on a limb & say that following year, 2017 is when it will be released.

22. Do you have any advice for other writers?

As my wisest, mysterious & greatest mentor, Queen Shibari once told me, “Don’t let anyone else have a HOLD on YOUR PEN.” And as countless of my peers told me, don’t stop writing. Keeping pimping the pen, knowatalmbout?

23. Any last thoughts for our readers?

First & foremost, all the credit goes to The Most High for blessing me with such a tremendous gift & I promise not to ever break that VOW. I will not let this gift that you blessed me with to go to waste…

Secondly, I wanna shout out some folks from my hometown of Port Arthur, knowatalmbout? S/O to my OG, Mitchell Queen, shotouts to Benzo, B-Lean, Black Joe, J-Will IV, Glen, Darius, Kendrick – all the “brothers” & “sisters”, knowatmsayin’? Willean, D.E.P., J-Boi, Hezeleo, Mike, Bun B & The Don, Pimp Chad, all my peoples from Deep East, Texas to the Deep West, #TripleSalute…

In addition, thank you for having me today & for naming me as The Featured Author Of The Month, Neely Worldwide Publishing. #TeamNWP4Life

And lastly, for the readers, I’m honored to be where I’m at in my career & in my Ultimate Dream that started when I was 17 years old, I’m privileged to be a poet, to be who I am, to be in that unknown but known fraternity, wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world, quote me.

And here’s a thought: Soar with ‘eagles’ in your life. Get rid of those ‘chickens’ that may be in your circle, especially if all they bring is in your life is nothing but negativity & chaos. Soar as the ‘eagle’ that you are & in time, you will join the angels in the sun…
